What is Year 5 GP?

In Year 5 students spend seven weeks in one GP practice becoming part of the team and community and practicing more independently while dealing with increased complexity. The students have sat their written Medical Licensing Assessment exam and are keen to be fully involved in direct patient assessment and care to develop their clinical reasoning, ability to deliver holistic medical care and work as a contributing member of the team. This will help them to get valuable exposure for their practical exam which takes place at the end of year 5. This attachment builds on their experience gained in year 3 and 4 in GP. Unlike year 4, time with other members of the practice team is not required and the focus is on getting students direct patient contact by whatever means available. GP and student feedback have been particularly positive when two students are placed in the same practice together. This allows for peer learning and support.

Students will record their progress on their portfolio (MyProgress) which also signposts them, with further General Practice Subdeanery support, to look at broader aspects of delivering medical care like health inequalities, overdiagnosis, persistent physical symptoms, chronic pain and others. The interface between primary and secondary care is further explored by being involved in a discharge letter audit and the patient journey.

The practice and tutor will fill in two feedback forms (mid-placement and at the end of the placement) and provide structured feedback on skills essential to good medical care by observing two actual clinical encounters and using two Minicex forms. After each MiniCex the tutor also collects the patient’s feedback as this plays a key role in guiding the development of professional behaviours. Attendance is monitored using MyProgress as it is in Year 4 (Tutor/practice do not have to take any action only if the student sends a notification of attendance but didn’t attend).
